Chapter Eight

Carly couldn’t help feeling a little blue when she got up on Saturday morning. She tried to tell herself she was being silly. Just because she wasn’t going to see Zane was no reason to be depressed. She had spent all day with him yesterday, and she would see him again on Monday. Besides, she had come here to see Brenda, not fall in love with some cowboy….

Love! Where had that come from? Even as she tried to tell herself it was impossible to fall in love so quickly, she knew it was true. She loved Zane Roan Eagle. The thought made her as giddy as a schoolgirl with her first crush.

Brenda was in the living room nursing J.J. when Carly went downstairs.

Brenda lifted one brow when Carly entered the room. “Well, you look almighty happy this morning,” she remarked. “Did you win the lottery or something?”

“No, nothing like that.” Carly ran her fingertips over the necklace Zane had bought her at the powwow. She tried to stop smiling but couldn’t.

“You gonna let me know what’s got you grinning like the cat who ate the canary?”

“Nothing, really. I’m just…” Carly shrugged. “Just happy. So, what are we going to do today?”

“Whatever you want, but we have to be back by six to pick up Edna from the airport.” Brenda looked thoughtful for a moment. “I was thinking of driving over to the Double Z sometime today. They’ve got a mare for sale that I’d kind of like to buy.”

“Sounds like fun.” Carly sat down on the other end of the sofa. “I’d love to go.”

Brenda studied her a moment, and then grunted softly. “Your enthusiasm wouldn’t have anything to do with the fact that a certain cowboy is going over to the Double Z this morning, would it?”

“Of course not,” Carly said, trying to sound nonchalant. “Why would you think that?”

“Gee, no reason, except that the two of you have been practically inseparable. If Jerry didn’t like Zane so much, he probably would have fired him for goofing off the past two weeks.”

Carly’s smile disappeared in an instant. “Zane’s not in trouble, is he? Jerry wouldn’t really fire him?”

“No, no, of course not. I was kidding. In spite of all the time Zane has spent with you, he’s still doing his job, though where he finds the time, I don’t know.”

Relief washed through Carly. She was pretty sure Zane would never forgive her if he lost his job because of her.

“All right,” Brenda said, rising. “Let me go change the baby’s diaper and put on some lipstick and I’ll be ready to go.”

The Double Z was even bigger than Brenda’s ranch. A long winding driveway lined by tall trees led up to the ranch house. Another road veered off to the right and led to the barns.

Carly was quick to notice that Brenda parked her truck next to Zane’s. A horse trailer with the Clark logo was hooked to the back of his truck. Brenda got J.J. out of his car seat and they walked toward the barn.
